Why should I consider speedboat insurance?

There’s nothing better than getting out on your speedboat in the fresh sea air, whether bay-hopping, waterskiing or exploring new waters.

Yet, as with any outdoor hobby, it doesn’t come without the risk of an accident.

Say you lose control of your speedboat and accidentally injure another person on the sea. Speedboat insurance can cover you up to £5m against third-party claims. Or, say you let a family member operate the boat while you’re aboard, and they accidentally run it over rocks, damaging the hull.

Having specialist speedboat insurance in place can help protect your craft against the unthinkable, so you have peace of mind when you’re cruising the coastal waters of the UK or continental Europe.

Speedboat Insurance FAQs
  • There are several factors that affect the cost of your policy, such as claims history and the class and value of your boat.

You can get an online quote in minutes to learn the cost of your cover.

  • Specialist speedboat insurance isn’t required by law, but it’s a prerequisite for membership with many launching sites and harbour authorities.

You might also want to consider insurance for peace of mind when waterborne or whilst towing your boat so you don’t have to worry about risks such as theft, damage, or third-party claims if you have an accident on your speedboat.

  • Yes—all speedboat insurance policies arranged by Craftinsure include cover for your boat and equipment including outboard motors and trailers.

  • You can include modifications and upgrades in your cover under the total sum insured. If you’ve already taken out a policy and then make modifications to your boat, it’s best to contact us as soon as possible to ensure you’re insured for your vessel’s true value after the modifications.

  • The maximum speed to remain covered by a speedboat insurance policy through Craftinsure is 50 knots.

  • With speedboat insurance through Craftinsure, your speedboat is covered while in transit and in storage. Ensure that when it’s on a trailer or stored away, it is properly secured to help reduce the risk of accidental damage to the vessel.

  • Your boat is still covered while being driven by your friends or family, provided they have your permission. This does not apply to drivers under the age of 20 unless you have extended your policy to include this. Even with this extension, they must be over the age of 16 and hold a Powerboat Level 2 qualification.

  • Specialist speedboat insurance through Craftinsure covers waterski and wakeboard liability as standard. You can choose to extend your policy to include inflatable toys for an additional premium.
