FAQs
  • Our comprehensive policies include cover for damage whilst in transit by road within the UK (and whilst in continental Europe under some). If the vessel is over 30ft, transit should be arranged via a professional haulier. Third-party liabilities whilst on the road are excluded as these are covered by vehicle policies to comply with road traffic legislation.

  • If your boat is over 25ft in length and over 20 years old if used on tidal waters (30 years if non-tidal), we require that you hold a full out of water survey report not over 5 years old and be able to confirm that any survey recommendations have been complied with. If you’re boat is already insured with us whilst you have a survey, we wouldn’t require another survey for 7 years.

  • We recommend to visit the YDSA website to find a surveyor near you or ask your local boatyard/marina as they will often know of local surveyors. If in doubt as to whether a surveyor would be acceptable to us, just ask!

  • We don’t have a specific age limit for replacement of rigging as so much depends on the boat type, usage and other factors but for most cruising yachts, we would expect standing rigging of 15 – 20 years old to be at or near the end of it’s life.

  • Tenders to Yachts and Motorboats are covered under the one policy provided that the total value you have selected is adequate to include them.

If you are insuring an entirely separate boat then you would need a separate policy to get it covered.

  • A full survey should cover all main components of the boat, much the same as a pre-purchase survey. The boat should be out of the water and in addition to the hull, should cover stern gear, skin fittings, electrics, gas, fuel and water systems as well as safety equipment. A separate rig inspection may be recommended.
